Pregame Skate Sabres have a chance to tie the Capitals

Sunday's scoreboard 7:30 ET, Washington at Detroit: It's bad enough for the Capitals that they were crushed on Sunday night in Chicago, but now, just 24 hours later, they get to travel to Detroit to take another top team in the Western Conference. And this one, the Red Wings, happens to be one of the best home teams in the NHL. The Capitals and Red Wings met earlier this season with Washington picking up a 7-1 win to extend their season-opening winning streak to seven games, while it was also the start of what turned out to be a six-game losing streak for Detroit. Neither team is playing all that well entering Monday's game, and while the Capitals struggles are well documented, the Red Wings come in on a four-game losing streak and have lost nine of their past 12 games and are now in a tie with Nashville for the No. 4 seed in the Western Conference. But while the biggest thing Detroit has to worry about at this point is home ice in the first-round, the Capitals are fighting just to make the playoffs, period. As of Monday morning they're holding a two-point lead over the Winnipeg Jets and Buffalo Sabres. The Jets also lost on Sunday night, while Buffalo is in action on Monday... 7:30 ET, Buffalo at Tampa Bay: With a Sabres win and a Capitals lo s to Detroit (in regulation) Buffalo could move into a tie with Washington for the final playoff spot in the East, and jump over the Jets for the time being. The Sabres have lost two straight overtime/shootout games, and five of their past six games have required some sort of extra time to decide a winner. And while the Capitals have to travel to Detroit on Monday, the Sabres are in Tampa Bay to take on a Lightning team that's pretty much now out of the playoff race and has lost five of its past six games. Of Buffalo's remaining 10 games they Patrick Ewing Jersey have a handful of matchups against non-playoff teams, including Wednesday against Montreal, an upcoming game with Minnesota, two games with Toronto and what could be a huge game with Washington. These are games the Sabres need to come away with two points in. 7:30 ET, New Jersey at New York: Three weeks ago it looked like a foregone conclusion that the New York Rangers were going to stroll into the playoffs as the No. 1 seed, and as of Monday night they have the Penguins (two points back) and Flyers (three points) right behind them. And on Monday they get a tough Devils team that would no doubt like to get the bad taste of Sunday's 5-2 lo s to Pittsburgh out of their mouth. The Devils won the last meeting, 4-1, and have a 3-2 lead in the season series which wraps up Maurice Harkless Jersey tonight at the Garden. Other games worth watching7 ET, Toronto at Boston: While the Senators are idle, the Bruins have an opportunity to add a bit more cushion to their Northeast Division lead if they can beat Toronto, which would complete a perfect season sweep. In the previous five games this season Boston has outscored the Maple Leafs 28-10.8 ET, Vancouver at Minnesota: The Canucks aren't playing their best hockey of the season right now, but perhaps a game against the struggling Wild is what gets them back in the right direction. 10 ET, Anaheim at San Jose: With a win against the Ducks, San Jose would move back into first place in the Pacific Division. The biggest advantage the Sharks still have is the fact they have more games remaining than just about every team they're competing with in the division, and for the remaining playoff spots in the west. Your promised miscellanyCapitals general manager George McPhee thinks the NHL game is in great shape and doesn't need many changes. The Hurricanes think they're still in the playoff race. Sure, why not. is finally starting to settle in with the Avalanche. Finally, the lone positive for the Capitals on Sunday night was scoring his 30th goal of the season, and it was a beauty as he went right through Blackhawks defenseman .
